  Ancient Tapestries & Wall Decor

The tunics and tapestries, replicas of Nazca, Paracas and Chimu cultures, combine rich colors and textures with flat, geometrically motivs, or with starling visual impact of human and/or zoomorphic figures, offer modernity and yet keeping the ancient techniques and designs which represent invaluables iconographys.

The special attention to abstraction and the feather work, possesses a startling modernity that belies their ancient origins.  With their bold, oftern abstract designs, richly textured surfaces and vibrant color combinations, their aesthetic appeal is without question, relating these textiles with modern art.

New designs for modern decoration

In Sumaqkay Workshop our artisans are encouraged to innovate with different combinations of motifs, designs and colors, which are designed to offer alternatives in moder decoration, using the same techniques, simbology, iconography of their ancestral cultures.  In this way we create original tapestries that match tradition with historical value and modern decoration.

Cultural identity and tradition

In Sumaqkay we support our artisans, so that these techniques are not lost for the next generations.   Since 2005, our gifted artisans dedicate themselves to weave the most complex patterns and are constantly trained to improved their skills.

Iconography

Iconography is present on the different tunics.  The designs and variety of motifs were affected by a number of factors - such as the majestic of the natural environment: the espectacular topography of the coast, sierra and jungle, the rich variety of flora and fauna, and the enduring mysteries of heavenly phenomena.

Featherwork

The featherwork remained a vibrant art since the spanish conquest in the Mid-sixteenth century.  Cultures such as Paracas, Nazca and Huari, the later city-states of Chimu, Chancay and Chincha, Ica, and finally the all-powerful Inca, saw feathers as supremely prestigious emblems and used them for a variety of rituals.

Pre-Columbian Peruvian featherwork is unique.  No other ancient civilization has bequeathed so many featherpieces of so many representative cultures; nor has any other featherwork from distant past survived in such a fine, often pristine condition
